Unscathed

Amanda Cruz Herberg Poetry / Lament

I climb, I claw

But slip and fall

So stuck in the muck,

Not going down, not going up.

Suffering in silence

No one sees the subtle violence-

When the thoughts start creeping in,

Like the minor notes on a violin;

And those that choose to ignore,

Sickening to its core.

So I pour and pour and pour

more-

Of anything I can get my hands on…

Smile then run smile then run

Before they realize what’s going on.

Hands in prayer formation

“God my God, why do you forsake me?”

Do you hear me crying?

Dirt under my nails, blood on my lips,

If you’re going to kick me, make it quick!

So that I don’t have to return to this…

The screams, the cries

Sounds the new lullabies

As you stand there, saying goodbye..

Ashes to Ashes, dust to dust,

“You to the left! but you for my lust.”

The grass is greener on the other side;

This side stained with fumes and hate

Your side furnished, rich with food just ate.

I dream of you- that we made amends,

I open my eyes and that’s where it ends,

[And I doubt I’ll ever see you again…]

It’s hard to be human, in a world run by humans.

When you look out for number one, on the run

It’s easy to ignore what’s plain, the pain-

And that’s why

Few survive, unstained, unscathed
