Devour ❤️‍🔥

Amanda Cruz Herberg Poetry / Lament

I feel a hunger with no end in sight-

Hunger for anger

               And for justice

                         And for calling out hypocrisy

I’m ready to FIGHT.

My anger lies within the emphasis on forgiveness

Over the emphasis on lamenting,

I’m here resenting

Your implication to remain calm in the face of adversity

That I shouldn’t lose my shit

Well,

Let me remind you of this:

“I just wish that the troublemakers who want to mutilate you would mutilate themselves.”

That’s a quote from the apostle Paul;

Now, that’s a “fuck you” if I ever saw one!

You tell me to lead you gently, like deer to the water

But don’t even bother,

Because I’m flipping tables in their honor!

You want me to be a light, alright

I will-

I’ll burn so bright I’ll become a flame

And I won’t go out until I see change!

So you can keep things light

With your halos and praying hands

And I’ll use mine to point out the hypocrisy in your claims,

Your lack of skin in the game.

I’m not the vision of light and love you think I should be,

And for that- I make no apologies.

So I’ll say it again because it bears repeating twice-

You will see me shine bright,

To the point of burning flames,

UNTIL the wrongness of things are

Acknowledged

                Validated and

                                   CHANGED.

Because even if you can’t put yourself in someone else’s shoes,

This does concern you.

A wise man once said:

“Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.”

Practice living with this truth in mind and then you will see-

Flames calm to a glow,

A glow to a flicker, and

A flicker that can still          brighten the darkest of nights.

So let us hear another word from the apostle Paul:

“For you have been called to live in freedom, my brothers and sisters. But don’t use your freedom to satisfy your nature. Instead, use your freedom to serve one another in love. For the whole law can be summed up in this one command: ‘ Love your neighbor as yourself.’

But-

If you are always biting and D E V O U R I N G ing one another,

Watch Out!

Beware of destroying one another.”

There’s more than one way to destroy and devour;

It’s not always the sharp tick of the tongue

That causes people to cower,

But by the soft voices of ignorance;

The sharp knife of apathy, clothed as sympathy,

Sung in allegiance.

~ Cuando el extranjero habita con vosotros en vuestra tierra, no lo oprimiréis. Como a uno de vosotros trataréis al extranjero que habite entre vosotros, y lo amarás como a ti mismo, porque extranjeros luisteis~

***

“When a foreigner resides among you in your land, do not mistreat them. 34 The foreigner residing among you must be treated as your native-born. Love them as yourself, for you were foreigners…”
Leviticus 19:33-34
